A Spotlight on Reishi for National Mushroom Day!

October 15th is the perfect time to spotlight Reishi, also known as the “mushroom of immortality” and one of the coactive ingredients inside KANHA FX Dream. This year, there’s an extra special reason to talk about it: a new sleep study looked at Reishi mushroom extract head-to-head with melatonin, and the results are in!

A Brief History of Reishi

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been a fixture in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years. In China, it’s known as lingzhi, often translated as “spirit mushroom,” and it appears in old herbal texts as an ingredient prized for long-term wellness.

With its shiny, reddish-brown cap and historically rare appearance in the wild, Reishi was believed to be reserved for emperors and the elite, earning it the nickname “mushroom of immortality.” It also shows up in Chinese art as a symbol of health, longevity, and good fortune.

Historically, Reishi was foraged rather than farmed. Now it’s cultivated, meaning the mushroom once saved for royalty can find its way into a nighttime gummy.

Reishi’s Role in Dream

Reishi has a long history of traditional use associated with rest and resilience. It contains bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides and triterpenes. Researchers are studying how these compounds may affect sleep, but traditional use alone does not establish a clinical benefit.

In FX Dream, Reishi teams up with two more coactive botanicals: chamomile and passion flower. You can read more about the other coactives used in our gummies.

Those botanicals sit alongside a balanced 1:1:1 blend of THC, CBN, and CBD. CBN stands for cannabinol, THC is the intoxicating cannabinoid in the blend, and CBD does not produce an intoxicating effect on its own. FX Dream brings these ingredients together in a nighttime gummy. Effects vary by person, and this formula should not be treated as a proven treatment for insomnia.

Reishi vs. Melatonin

A study presented at the SLEEP 2026 conference compared Reishi extract with melatonin in an eight-week randomized trial of 218 adults with chronic insomnia. One group took 5 mg of melatonin nightly; the other took 980 mg of Reishi extract standardized to 6% triterpenes.

Researchers used the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), a questionnaire about insomnia’s impact on daily life. Both groups improved. The abstract reported a larger average ISI reduction with Reishi than melatonin (−8.7 versus −5.6 points). The difference remained after adjustment for age, sex, and baseline insomnia severity. Of the 218 participants, 209 completed the trial, and no serious adverse events were observed.

This study tested standalone Reishi extract, not KANHA FX Dream or its cannabinoid and botanical blend. Its results do not establish that FX Dream treats insomnia or outperforms melatonin.

The authors discuss GABA-related activity as a possible explanation, not a mechanism established by this trial. These are preliminary findings reported in a conference abstract, rather than a full study report. Read the original SLEEP 2026 abstract, LBA 1422 on page 14 for details.
